Following her grandfather's recent death, Hamaji Ooyama lives out her days on an isolated mountain hunting for food and caring for herself. One day, Hamaji's brother, an aspiring samurai living in Edo, sends her an invitational letter to end her solitary life and join him in the city. When she arrives, however, she is met with a grisly sight—the heads of six dogs displayed for all to see. These heads belong to the Fuse, a group of eight human-dog hybrids that have been terrorizing the people of Edo. Hamaji assists a strange man escape a group of assailants and makes it to her brother's house, where he asks that she help him collect the heads of the remaining two Fuse, as well as the Shogunate-sponsored bounty. But it is easier said than done—as the Fuse can blend into human society almost seamlessly—and the kind man Hamaji had just helped showed the Fuse's telltale signs.

This is a story that weaves together people and a town. A coal mining town crowded with small-scale excavators, commonly known as the Hakoniwa. In this town that changes daily like a labyrinth, there's a girl named Kagari who runs a mapmaking business and a boy named Yuya who dreams of breaking free from the Hakoniwa. Eventually, the two, along with the unique residents of the town, find themselves confronting a conspiracy that shakes the entire town. Business is slow for the Ootsuji Detective Agency. Soutarou and his juvenile sidekick Saki will take any job that comes along, even one that sounds like a lot more risk than it’s worth. It’s festival season in the city but away from the public eye, a wave of mysterious disappearances has occurred. A newspaperman hires Soutarou to investigate, suggesting that answers might lie somewhere in the Dark, the notorious, anarchic maze that is the city’s physical, social, and moral underground. Soutarou subcontracts the gig to Saki, but soon enough regrets it when the kid also goes missing. Now Soutarou is obligated to venture into the Dark himself, and confront its dubious subterranean denizens, including the malicious Laughing Masks gang and the renegade police squad piloting the fearsome Demon 463 armored train! By a twist of fate, a herbivorous dinosaur finds a lost egg and brings it back to her nest. When the egg hatches, however, a carnivorous dinosaur emerges. Unable to abandon the child, she names him Heart and raises him in exile alongside her own child. As Heart comes of age, he struggles to eat the same food as his family and runs away in disgrace when he learns that he cannot live properly without meat. Years later, the now feared predator Heart encounters a situation similar to his past—he spots a dinosaur egg opposite his kind. As it emerges, Heart remarks that the newborn is delicious-looking. The newborn herbivore thinks that Heart is his father and takes delicious-looking, or Umasou, as his name. Unable to eat a newborn who loves him, Heart reluctantly decides to raise Umasou as his own. As he nurtures a forbidden child like his mother before him, Heart struggles to deal with an unforgiving world and the true natures of predator and prey.
